WP 2: Interviews with researchers |
The objective of GenderBasic is to ensure a better integration of the gender dimension in (basic) life sciences research.
How do participants of Integrated Projects and Networks of Excellence financed by the first and second calls Thematic Priority Food Quality & Safety (TP5) of FP6 experience the process of integrating the gender dimension in their research activities? How is attention to the gender dimension integrated in the content of the main research activities? Which activities have been undertaken in the project consortia to mobilize attention to the gender dimension in research among the scientists?
Semi-structured interviews were conducted with researchers from thirteen projects, focusing on: Are sex- and/or gender-related factors taken into account in the project? How are those factors addressed in the different components of research projects? What has been achieved? What has been proven difficult?

WP 3: Inventory of guidelines and policies |
An inventory of guidelines and/or institutional policies regarding integration of the gender dimension among high profile European Institutes for life sciences research (focusing on basic) research was made. Interviews were conducted with key informants of three high profile medical research institutions in the EU (INSERM, KAROLINSKA INSTITUTE, CHARITÉ UNIVERSITATSMEDIZIN) where specific initiatives have been taken to facilitate attention to the gender dimension in biomedical research.
Why and how were those initiatives taken? How are they financed? What was achieved? What role can the EU play in supporting such initiatives?

WP 4: Inventory of experts |
Experts are considered to be researchers in (basic) life sciences research (including epidemiologists, methodologists, and clinical statisticians), who have experimented with or are interested in integrating the gender dimension in their research, as well as gender experts who have a connection to life sciences research.

WP 5: Expert Meeting GenderBasic |
An expert meeting was organized in January 2007, in Maastricht, the Netherlands. The objective of the Expert Meeting was to provide scientists involved in health related research (with a focus on basic and clinical research) funded by the EU Framework programmes, with practical tools, relevant examples and best practices as regards paying attention to sex and gender differences in the content of their research. Ten reviews have been commissioned which together cover various methodological aspects of paying attention to sex and gender in research as well as six health areas where attention to sex and gender issues is urgently called for. The methodological reviews address basic, translational, clinical and public health research. The identified health area's are: anxiety disorders, asthma, metabolic syndrome, nutrigenomics, osteoporosis, and work-related health. These reviews have been published in Gender Medicine, Volume 4, Supplement B, 2007. GenderBasic: Promoting Integration of Sex and Gender Aspects in Biomedical and Health-Related Research.
